As I understood it, the film is still being edited. They were also still discussing how public they wanted to go with it out of respect for the families. She did mention the possiblity of a feature film dealing with shunning. Sounded like it would not be concentrating only on JWs, but would explore other religions / cults / organizations as well.
the filmaker Erin, and the subject Elizabeth, are both exwitnesses. We see the documentation of Elizabeth's story, but we do not learn Erin's, nor did she speak about it.
Elizabeth was df'd twice after her own confessions of wrong doing, first one summoned and not her choice, 2nd was voluntary.

I was there.
60+ in attendance.
James Penton was in the audience as well. It was obvious there were other ex witnesses too, but I don't know who.
We all watched the film then listened to excellent comments made by 3 professors - all women - from what seemed like 3 different fields of academic and media studies.This was followed by the filmaker Erin McMichael's comments, then an open discussion.
It seemed obvious to those who know little or nothing about the JWs that this subject is very complicated, emotionally charged, and the movement in general "not as it appears to the public". Dr. Penton gave some jw background information that had a few people shaking their head in disbelief.
Even though this was open to the public, privacy was a big concern to protect their families. It was very well done, definitely raised some awareness about JWs and shunning.
I believe education is the key. I'm glad I went.

hi everyone, i havent been here for a while but i do pop in and read whenever i can.
the economic downturn has left my jw husband with much less work which means hes home a lot, which means little jwn-time for me :( so many new ones here!

There is so much great advice here. I can also totally relate to how difficult it is to take the next step. (I'm struggling myself) You've been through alot and have accomplished so much. Sounds like you're in a state of limbo (I know the feeling) a transition phase between the break free and the moving forward.
The empty-nester is a real issue for women our age + the rest of things it all adds up. You've been so busy protecting your kids, seeing them off, dealing with your health issues, the "fade" - PHEW. Now it must seem like there's nothing to do.
Exercise is a great way to increase those endorphins and raise that seretonin level!!. Have you ever tried a yoga class, or Tai Chi? Its an awesome tool to get your insides motivated.
Sounds like you need a gentle push with ideas and support (this board is so good for that) a GREAT BIG HUG (steal this from your hubby) and maybe progress buddy. You can count on me for that - amazing things can be done over the phone :-) - I could actually use a progress buddy myself!

my husband and i faded/mysteriously disappeared from meetings over a year ago.
we've had a few visits from elders (where we said very little but thanked them for their time), the last one being when we had some nice jack o lanterns sitting on our porch.
on saturday, we got letters cordially inviting us to our beheading, i mean, our judicial committee meeting.
I'd send them a CEASE AND DESIST letter exactly like the ones the WT sends out to silence critical websites. Change to wording to personalize, but give them a taste of their own medicine.

"i'm too busy at work" less controlling articles about gathering material things just to show off etc... "i need an education to get a good job" no more guilt over fame, recognition etc.
I'm just wondering if the WT would adjust their (invisible) presence.
Well, I guess a more realistic question/comment would be: Since the articles/talks/guilt trips seem to harp on how to DO MORE when it seems to be physically/mentally/spiritually/ impossible - i.e. giving the elders the fading reasons to DO LESS.
What if all of a sudden the people just trying to fade away gave the real reasons for their departure? Or Maybe the tightening IS THEIR DESPERATE RESPONSE ?

"I'm too busy at work" – less controlling articles about gathering material things just to show off etc..
"I need an education to get a good job" – no more guilt over fame, recognition etc
"I'm burned out" – no more talk about how you should be prioritizing your own life.
"I'm sick" – no more idolizing articles about sister wheelchair recruiting entire neighborhood.
So the truth of it like:
"The failure to report known or suspected child molesters caused another tragedy" - Maybe more articles on "how & when to report to police" from a moral/legal standpoint. NOT how to protect the WT's image.
"Too many doctrines are self-serving" – talks that invite open respectful discussion without marking or condemnation.
"The blood guilting blood policy is too much to bear" – new articles that apologize for all the needless deaths and martyrdom practice
"My conscience cannot handle the double standards one more minute" – acknowledgment and accountability regarding Malawi/Mexico, Bulgaria blood, Russian persecution/freedom, right down to hierarchy in the KH.
"Your control is ripping apart our family" – articles about how to STOP shunning your loved one.
"I have a sick relative and no one will help" – No more time sheets to hand in - care for the widows, orphans, & the poor, is just as important as bragging about hours and RVs
"607 BC is ridiculous and so much more!" – Stop using circular reasoning, quotes out of context, quotes from the stone age that have been scientifically reversed.
etc etc etc
This is not meant to criticize anyone who is fading - believe me I realize the problems with trying to step back and re-evaluate.

i am an emotional mess.. yesterday, i was so firm.
today i feel like crying.
it was a lovely, sunny day here.
Jgnat: thanks for posting that. Too many times you see a JW in such emotional distress after the elders take away their god from them.
What they can't imagine is that the elders have no power to do this. The WT is not god or their channel to god. The elders by extension are not their judges or their mediators or their christ.
It is a hard thing to separate in the beginning, and they will always have control until you do.
